Considering the idea of braces, there is one question that has crossed your mind repeatedly:

Clear braces vs metal braces, which should i consider?

This is a tough decision to make because it is based not only on looks but on other factors as well. While most people believe that clear braces are always preferable over metal ones as the former look more aesthetically pleasing, the latter can be just as good, especially in modern dentistry. Today's metal braces are small, comfortable, and highly efficient.

How do you know what is the best choice for you? This question will have several different answers as they depend on your teeth, lifestyle, and preferences.

Clear Braces vs Metal Braces

Initially, the two types of braces may seem to be quite dissimilar. The clear braces have ceramic brackets that are matched to the color of your teeth, and the metal braces have stainless steel brackets that stand out.

However, both types of braces do pretty much the same thing. They exert gentle yet consistent pressure on the teeth, making them align. Both types of braces can deal with crowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and a lot of other orthodontic issues.

If Appearance Matters Most, Clear Braces Have the Advantage

For many adults and teenagers, self-confidence while getting the treatment is as important as the outcome of the treatment itself.

This is where clear braces can make all the difference.

The brackets being made of a material which is very similar in color to your natural teeth, the braces become almost invisible while talking, taking photos, or having business discussions. It is always good to know that you can smile and be confident that your braces do not stand out.

However, being clear does not mean that the brackets will be invisible. It only means that they are more difficult to see. People will notice that you have braces on up close.

Invisalign may be recommended by your orthodontist if you want the least visible treatment option. Otherwise, ceramic braces are an excellent choice for you.

When Treatment Efficiency Is the Priority, Metal Braces Often Come Out Ahead

The effectiveness of metal braces has been proven over time, since they are very effective, especially in difficult cases. Brackets today are much smaller than those from several years ago, thus being less uncomfortable but highly effective in their function of control of teeth movement.

In cases where the patient suffers from severe crowding or complicated bites, where the teeth need special movement, metal braces are often considered more efficient for orthodontists, and sometimes even faster to be used than ceramic braces. This is the main reason why metal braces are recommended by orthodontists for their durability and efficiency.

Does Clear Braces Treatment Take More Time?

That may not really be true. In most cases, there is only very little difference in the time required for your treatment. However, ceramic braces create more friction compared to the metal braces which may slow down the movements of some of your teeth during complex cases. This is one of the reasons why your orthodontist might recommend metal braces when you need bite correction.

It is important to note that the time that your treatment will take mostly depends on how often you attend your orthodontic sessions, keep oral hygiene, and follow the instructions of your orthodontist.

Which Braces Cause Pain?

This is one of the major concerns for most patients prior to getting orthodontic braces. However, it is good to note that the pain caused by metal braces and clear braces is the same. After you have been fitted with your braces or an adjustment process, it is common to feel some degree of tenderness for about a week as your teeth start to move. This is very normal and will only take a week to disappear. Most patients adapt to wearing their braces very fast.

Are Clear Braces More Fragile?

Though they are extremely resistant, ceramic braces cannot compare to stainless steel in toughness. If you love to eat hard food or play contact sports, metal braces might be better for you since you will have to chew on something hard from time to time.

In addition, ceramic brackets can break under great pressure, and therefore, it is recommended by orthodontists to take care of them carefully. It is also worth saying that both options should last until the end of treatment provided they are taken care of correctly.

Which Option Is Easier to Take Care of?

Whichever option you choose, taking care of braces is an absolute necessity. Taking care of metal braces is a bit easier than taking care of clear braces because there is no problem with their discoloration.

With clear braces, ceramic brackets do not get stained, but tiny elastic ties that hold the wire in place can easily get stained if exposed to coffee, tea, red wine, curry, or smoking. The good thing is that these ties are always replaced during adjustments, but proper brushing helps to avoid stains between appointments.

Clear Braces – Are They Worth Their Premium Price Tag?

That is when your priorities will come into play the most. Many adults are glad to invest some additional money into their clear braces in order to enjoy the benefits of increased self-confidence which they get from such an orthodontic treatment option. However, if you often meet clients or deliver speeches in front of people, then you might find that the extra money you have spent was well worth it.

Alternatively, if durability, low cost, or severity of your dental problems is what you prioritize, then metal braces can still be considered one of the most cost-effective orthodontic treatments out there.

So, Which Braces Should You Choose?
